LOW COST ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR WITH DIGITAL CONVERSION ON A SINGLE ISA BOARD

The ULTRAMETs UMT-12 flaw detectors are designed in the form
of extension cards for IBM PC compatibles.State-of-art technology includes large scale
integration IC's and four layer card construction, allowing all the
necessary circuitry to be accommodated on a single card.
As a result excellent measurement parameters and high stability and reliability of operation are
obtained. These allow the cards to be eminently suitable for a wide range of users, such
as industrial test laboratories, scientific institutes, academic laboratories, automated
industrial ultrasonic test stations - and many others.
The ULTRAMET flaw detectors are
used with standard ultrasonic transducers. With a very fast analogue to digital conversion
they not only replace very successfully dedicated analogue type flaw detectors, but also
open a whole new range of possibilities by operation in the computing environment.
Employment of mathematical methods, specific for the spectral analysis of signals, enables
defining of parameters of the tested materials with an accuracy
hitherto unattainable with analogue techniques . Moreover, more complicated measuring experiments
are now possible, such as automatic measurement of wave velocity as a function of
temperature, pressure etc., three dimensional presentation of surfaces of immersed objects
( employing suitable mechanical scanner ) and many others, as they can be easily assembled
using UMT card and additional interfaces and controllers. Software for such experiments
can be created by the user with assistance of our highly accessible libraries of card's
functions and control procedures.

EXAMPLES OF SELECTED TYPES OF MEASUREMENTS

Display of the main operational mode of the UMT-12 flaw detector.
The lower window shows sequence of echoes ( rectified ) , the upper window shows zoomed
fragment of the trace ( HF signal ) .

Example of TCG ( Time Control Gain ) operation .
Sequence of echoes with applied standard algorithm, adjusting amplitude to set level ( e.g. 0.7 H )

DGS ( Distance Gain Size ) diagram used to estimate size of equivalent flaw.
Program contains options ( not shown here ) assisting in use of the plot and options for an automatic
estimate of the size of the flaw.

Power density spectrum for a transducer pulse of nominal frequency 4 MHz .

Lower window shows sequence of two echoes obtained from W1
calibration block ( 25mm direction ) examined with 2 MHz probe.
The upper windows displays correlation plot of the two signal fragments contained by the frames.
Evaluated time of flight ( with resolution < 1ns ) and the wave velocity are shown in result box.
